Finding Sand Dollars at Ocean Isle Beach, NC

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

When you stay at our oceanfront hotel in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, you can’t help but want to walk along the shore in search of seashells. Sand dollars in particular are an exciting find, so we’d like to share with you a few tips on finding sand dollars along the coast.

Seashells in Ocean Isle Beach, NCUnderstanding the tide schedule is especially important to finding sand dollars, as low tide is the best time to find them. If there’s a particular area where you have some luck, return to that area at every low tide, as there could be a bed nearby. After a storm or hurricane is always a good time to look, even in high tide areas where debris could have been pushed upwards. And sand dollars are particularly fragile, so bring along a bowl lined with a cloth or paper towel so you can lay them out individually to avoid breakage.
